Silt jewelry is made using stainless steel and 14–18k gold PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) plating. Both materials are built to hold up to everyday life. Here's what to know about each, and how to keep your pieces looking their best.

Stainless Steel

Our stainless steel pieces are hypoallergenic, tarnish-resistant, and water-resistant, making them a great choice for everyday wear — including while showering, swimming in a pool, or working out. Stainless steel won't fade, rust, or discolor with normal use.

Caring for Stainless Steel

  • Clean with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap as needed.

  • For a deeper clean, use a soft-bristle toothbrush with mild soap and warm water, then dry thoroughly.

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or polishing compounds, which can scratch the surface.

14–18k Gold PVD Plating

Our gold pieces use PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) plating, a process that bonds a layer of 14–18k gold to the base metal at the molecular level under vacuum. This creates a noticeably more durable finish than traditional gold plating or gold fill, with several advantages:

  • Superior scratch resistance: the bonded finish stands up to everyday wear far better than traditional plating.

  • Durability: built to handle daily wear without flaking or peeling.

  • Corrosion resistance: resists tarnishing and oxidation over time.

  • Hypoallergenic:  a safe option for sensitive skin.

  • Waterproof: safe for everyday water exposure, including handwashing and light rain.

  • Longevity: holds its color and finish significantly longer than traditional plating methods.

  • Low maintenance: no special routine needed to keep it looking good.

  • Eco-friendly: the PVD process uses fewer chemicals and produces less waste than traditional electroplating.

Caring for PVD Gold-Plated Pieces

PVD plating is significantly more resilient than traditional gold plating, but a little care will keep it looking its best for years to come:

  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to remove oils and residue.

  • While PVD plating is waterproof, we still recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to chlorine and saltwater, which can dull the finish over time.

  • Avoid direct contact with harsh chemicals, such as household cleaning products.

  • Do not use abrasive polishing compounds or ultrasonic cleaners.

Storage

  • Store pieces separately in the provided soft pouch or lined jewelry box to prevent scratching and tangling.

  • Keep jewelry away from direct sunlight and humidity when not in use.

  • Fasten clasps on chains and bracelets before storing to help prevent tangling.
